“Come back when you have six months of processing history.” It’s a maddening answer for a business that can’t process until someone approves it. The good news: history is one input among several, and the others are within your control.
What the bank is really asking
Processing history is a shortcut for a harder question: will this business still be here when the disputes arrive? A clean six-month statement answers it cheaply. Without one, you answer it a different way — with everything else in the file.
What you can put in its place
- Business bank statements. Revenue arriving by other means — invoices, transfers, cash deposits — still demonstrates a real operating business.
- Personal credit and a personal guarantee. For a new entity, the owner’s standing carries the file. Expect to sign personally.
- A finished website. Not a placeholder. It’s the most-examined asset a new merchant has.
- Supplier and fulfillment evidence. Contracts, inventory, or a fulfillment partner proves you can actually deliver what you sell.
- Relevant experience. If you ran a similar business before, say so — and name it, so it can be verified.
Accept the training-wheels terms
A first account frequently arrives with a volume cap, a reserve, and slower funding. Take them. Three to six months of clean processing is the fastest route to better terms, and you cannot build that record while holding out for terms nobody gives a brand-new merchant. Ask for a review date in writing instead of arguing the starting position.
Two things that will sink a new application
Overstating projections. A brand-new merchant forecasting enormous monthly volume reads as either naive or dishonest, and both get declined. Hiding a prior business. If you had an account terminated before, disclose it — underwriters find it anyway, as covered in what to do when you’re declined.
Start narrow, then widen
If your model spans several product lines, apply around the cleanest one first. Get approved, build the record, then expand the account. Leading with your most exotic revenue stream on day one invites a decline that follows you to the next bank.
First accounts are a specialty
At Creditcard Payment Services, we place first merchant accounts for businesses with no processing history — because we know which banks weigh the other evidence and which simply won’t look. Since 2009, most approvals in 2–3 business days.
