There is a short window between a customer calling their bank and a chargeback landing on your account. Alert networks sell you access to that window — and for merchants near a ratio threshold, it’s one of the few tools that changes the number quickly.
How alerts work
When a cardholder disputes a transaction at a participating issuer, an alert is pushed to the merchant within hours. You get a brief window — typically a day or so — to refund the transaction. If you do, the dispute is withdrawn and never becomes a recorded chargeback. You lose the sale either way. What you save is the chargeback fee, the ratio point, and the attention of your risk team.
The arithmetic that decides whether it’s worth it
You pay per alert received, whether or not you would have won that dispute. So the question is simple: is the cost of an alert lower than the fee plus the ratio damage of letting it through? For most merchants with meaningful dispute volume, yes. For a merchant with very few disputes, the subscription costs more than it saves. And if a large share of your disputes are ones you’d have won at representment, alerts are paying to surrender cases — worth weighing against fighting them properly.
Where alerts genuinely earn their keep
- You’re approaching a monitoring threshold. Nothing else pulls a chargeback ratio down this fast.
- Subscriptions and free trials — high volumes of “I forgot I signed up” disputes you were never going to win anyway.
- Digital goods, where proof of delivery is weak by nature.
- After a shutdown scare, when your processor wants visible improvement quickly.
What they don’t do
Coverage is not universal — only participating issuers generate alerts, so some disputes arrive as chargebacks regardless. Alerts also don’t fix the reason customers are disputing. A merchant who refunds every alert and changes nothing else simply pays for the same problem twice: once in alerts and once in lost revenue. Treat them as a tourniquet while you fix the underlying causes covered in how to reduce chargebacks.
Set it up as part of a plan
At Creditcard Payment Services, alerts are one piece of how we keep high-risk merchant accounts open — alongside descriptors customers recognize, prevention that reduces the volume, and banks that underwrite for realistic dispute rates. Since 2009.
