Gold contactless payment terminal accepting a credit card

Most merchants glance at one number on their statement: the total deducted. That number tells you almost nothing about whether you’re being treated fairly. The answer is three sections lower, in the part nobody reads. Here’s how to read it in ten minutes.

Start with the effective rate

Take your total fees for the month, divide by your total sales volume, multiply by 100. That single percentage is the only honest way to compare providers — it captures everything, including the fees a quoted “rate” conveniently leaves out. Do this for three consecutive months. A stable effective rate means predictable pricing. One that drifts upward while your business hasn’t changed means something was added, or your transactions stopped qualifying for the rates you were promised.

The three buckets every statement contains

  1. Interchange — paid to the card-issuing bank. Set by the networks, identical for every processor. Nobody can discount this.
  2. Assessments — paid to Visa, Mastercard and the rest. Also fixed.
  3. The processor’s margin — the only part that is actually negotiable, and the only part worth arguing about.

If your statement doesn’t separate these, you’re on bundled pricing and you cannot see the margin at all. That’s a choice your provider made, not a technical limitation.

The line items worth hunting for

Downgrades are where the real money hides

A transaction downgrades when it doesn’t carry the data its category requires — a missing address verification response, a late-settled batch, or a commercial card processed without the extra fields it needed. B2B merchants lose the most here, and the fix is often configuration rather than negotiation. That’s the entire subject of Level 2 and Level 3 processing.

Three questions to ask your provider

What was my effective rate last month? What percentage of my volume downgraded, and why? Which line items on this statement are yours rather than the card networks’? A provider who answers all three plainly is worth keeping. One who redirects you to the headline rate is telling you something.

We’ll read it with you

At Creditcard Payment Services, we go through statements line by line with merchants who suspect they’re overpaying — including ones we didn’t place. Since 2009 we’ve set up high-risk and retail merchant accounts with pricing that survives being read closely.

Send us last month’s statement and we’ll tell you what it actually costs you. Apply online or call 1-800-475-6011. No cost, no obligation.
