Black credit card with a gold EMV chip

The difference between a two-day approval and a three-week one is almost never the business. It’s whether the file was complete when it arrived. Here is everything to have ready before you apply.

The core documents

That last one carries more weight than anything else you can provide. A history showing real volume and a low dispute rate answers the underwriter’s main question before they ask it.

The website checklist merchants forget

Underwriters visit your site. It is part of the application whether you think of it that way or not. Before you apply, make sure it has:

  1. Clear descriptions and pricing for what you actually sell.
  2. A refund and cancellation policy that a customer could find without hunting.
  3. Terms of service and a privacy policy.
  4. Working contact details — a real phone number and a monitored email.
  5. For subscriptions: billing frequency and cancellation terms stated on the checkout page itself.
  6. Visible security signalling at checkout, and a payment page that isn’t throwing browser warnings.

Thin or contradictory websites cause more avoidable declines in high-risk underwriting than almost anything else.

Numbers to have at hand

Expect to state your average ticket, your highest anticipated ticket, projected monthly volume, and how long after payment you deliver. Give realistic figures rather than flattering ones. Approvals are issued with limits attached to these numbers, and a merchant who understates volume to look safe ends up capped below what they actually process — then triggers a review in month two.

Disclose the ugly parts

A previous terminated account, a period of high chargebacks, a MATCH list entry — say so up front. Underwriters verify these independently, and a discovered omission is an automatic decline. A disclosed problem, by contrast, can usually be structured around with a reserve or a volume cap. Surprises can’t. This is the whole logic of how underwriting works.

One file, packaged properly

At Creditcard Payment Services, we tell you exactly what a given bank needs before the file goes in, and we present it the way that bank reads it. That’s why most high-risk merchant account approvals come back in 2–3 business days.
